Who is Liu Yanfen, and why was this name chosen as the album title?
The name Liu Yanfen originated from a 2017 variety show. Jackson Yee disguised himself as a female character for the show’s assignment and created the name Liu Yanfen offhand.
The album cover originates from a 2001 editorial shot of Gong Li for French Vogue.
For the April 2022 issue of VOGUE+, Jackson Yee served as guest editor and created two fictional figures. By day, Xie works a regular job; by night, Liu transforms into a rock musician pouring out his passion in underground venues. Might this Liu originate from Liu Yanfen?
Within the album, Liu Yanfen is a female vocalist performing at a cabaret. She observes the men and women on the dance floor, while also grappling with troubles of her own. Conceived by Jackson Yee, Liu Yanfen serves as a fictional alias for both experiencer and observer. She functions as an entity that transcends the limits of gender，age and individual selfhood, enabling a leap into the diverse perspectives of others. This constitutes the core concept of the album..

In the album’s behind-the-scenes documentary, each artist involved in realising this concept shares their insights, gradually piecing together the world of Liu Yanfen. Contributors include the music video director who visualised the underground cabaret, the audio director in charge of drama voice acting and foley effects, the physical album packaging designer, the album producer, songwriters and composers, alongside Jackson Yee himself.
